DIY Web Design… Okay, So, design is important….but where do you fit in and how can we help?
You might be a internet guru and can build or edit your own website, but can you design it as well?
It has been my experience that 99% if not all developers in the world are not very good at design. That is okay, because it is also true that 99% of the designers can’t code worth a hill of beans either. It has also been my experience that most small businesses that want a site built end up having a friend build it, or a friend’s kids. So, chances are you have already decided on how your site is going to be built, you just need some help in making your site look nice.
If you use a CMS you have access to themes, or templates that you can either download for free or purchase and install. But how many times have you downloaded a theme only to find out that it really doesn’t represent your company at all? And tweaking it so that it is a good representation never really looks all that great. Not to mention what a pain it is if you screw something up and your site goes down, or your SEO is damaged.
When you get to the point of actually needing someone to help you with your site, be careful. There are a lot of website designers that only work with purchased templates and know very little about how to design and build a site that is specific for your company. As a matter of fact, I just got done fixing a site that was put together by such a developer. They left in the wrong analytics code and didn’t redirect the old site to the new one. Even though their damage was caught within a month Google had already started to drop their site. If you have any questions regarding your site’s developer, feel free to ask. I will give you my honest opinion, and I won’t try to sell you anything. I can also point you in the direction of some good online sources where you can get your site critiqued.
The way people view your site can affect its performance and your site’s ranking. Your design is pretty critical. It can build the trust that you need.
